Join us for a wide-ranging conversation with Rahul Mehrotra, architect, urbanist and Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, as we explore the complex forces shaping India's urban landscape. From the politics of renaming cities to the challenges of creating inclusive spaces, Rahul shares profound insights drawn from decades of practice. We discuss his innovative approach to "softening thresholds" between social classes through thoughtful design, the role of civil society in urban development, and why India's cities need both order and chaos to thrive. Through examples like Chandigarh and Jaipur, Rahul illustrates how urban spaces can balance structure with organic growth. The conversation delves into provocative questions about India's urban future - from the outdated criteria used to classify towns to the "tyranny of images" driving cities to emulate global models rather than respond to local needs. Rahul's penetrating analysis reveals why addressing India's urban challenges requires working simultaneously at multiple scales while respecting the value of different architectural approaches, from global to vernacular. His perspective offers a masterclass in how thoughtful design can help bridge social divides while creating more livable cities.

His extensive research on economic development, governance, and decentralization informs a deep understanding of how institutions shape economic outcomes in developing countries.
Through his characteristically clear and nuanced explanations, Dr. Bardhan helps us understand how historical context and current challenges intersect, offering thoughtful pathways toward more equitable and sustainable democratic systems. Drawing from her experience as a foster parent to multiple dogs and her work in animal law reform, Dulki illuminates the practical challenges and opportunities in improving animal welfare in South Asia. Her approach bridges the gap between idealistic animal rights philosophy and the practical realities of implementing change, offering insights into how legal frameworks can better protect animals while respecting cultural contexts.
Our conversation reveals how compassion for animals can be cultivated through a combination of legal reform, cultural wisdom, and practical dietary choices. Dulki's work exemplifies how we can move beyond rigid ideologies to create meaningful change for animals while remaining grounded in reality and cultural sensitivity.

I had the honor & privilege of talking to one of the kindest and most tireless humanitarian spirits - Joyce Williams. Joyce has a Doctorate In Ministry (D.Min) from the United Theological Seminary (Dayton, OH), and a Master of Divinity (M.Div) from the Colgate Rochester Divinity School/Crozer Theological Seminary (Rochester, NY), she has also studied at various universities in Ghana and Egypt and is currently a practicing Hospice Chaplain in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Joyce and I go way back to the early 2000s when I was her now-deceased son Daryl's roommate while I was studying in Grad School. Daryl suffered from quadriplegia inflicted by a bullet wound to his spinal cord. His unwavering and indomitable spirit was something I admired in him, the pursuits that he involved himself in after his recovery are a testament to the kind of person he was and they echo even a decade after his passing.
Joyce had me in tears and deep reflection during and after the podcast conversation with the sheer depths of the human spirit that she modeled.
I hope you enjoy the Gift to Humanity that Joyce is to all of us.
